TRAVEL INFORMATION

Important notes about the island of Vieques
  • Prepare to be flexible with your plans and expectations.
  • Please understand that any closures or changes are out of our control.
  • There is an urgent care center on the island of Vieques but no hospital. Any major medical issues are handled on main island Puerto Rico with transport either by ferry or flight.
  • Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have specific questions. We are happy to provide you with the most updated information we have.
Getting to Vieques:
Plan ahead for your transportation from the main island of Puerto Rico to Vieques. Options for getting here include flying or taking the ferry.

Flying
Cape Air flies from San Juan (SJU)
  • This can be the most convenient if you are traveling here the same day you arrive in Puerto Rico, but it is usually the most expensive option.
Vieques Air Link flies from Isla Grande Airport in San Juan (SIG) or Ceiba (RVR).
  • This is usually the cheapest option and requires and 10 - 15 minute Uber or taxi ride from SJU to SIG

Ferry
The ferry travels from the town of Ceiba on the east coast of the main island of Puerto Rico.  You will not be able to take your rental car from the main island of Puerto Rico on the ferry to Vieques.

Tips for a successful ferry trip
  • Purchase ferry tickets in advance at https://www.puertoricoferry.com
  • Please note that only 20% of ferry tickets are sold in advance online and the remaining 80% are sold only at the ferry terminal.
  • Schedules and ticket sales typically open the month before, but there is no exact date to release the schedule for the next month. There is no reason to delay purchasing your ferry tickets online.
  • If your desired departure time is not available for purchase online,  go ahead and purchase the later ticket online so that you have a ticket to Vieques. Monitor the website for the number of tickets available for purchase at the box office for your desired time.  You can decide if it is worth traveling to the ferry terminal to exchange your ticket for an earlier ferry.
  • One request:  Please do not buy tickets on multiple ferries if you are unsure of your arrival time and just because the tickets are so cheap.  Residents of Vieques depend on the ferry system to get to the main island for medical appointments and other important aspects of daily life.  Please be mindful of that purchasing additional ferry tickets limits access to needed seats on the ferry for others.  There is an option to exchange your tickets online by clicking the "Manage Booking" tab and entering your confirmation number.  You can also email [email protected] for any questions or requests to change your ticket.

Unsolicited Opinions
  • If you question whether ferry tickets will be available and that feels stressful to you, flying is a good option to consider. Just don't wait to figure all of the out the day before or the day you want to arrive on Vieques.  Flying Vieques Air Link can range from $54 per person from Ceiba (RVR) to $124 per person from San Juan (SIG).
  • It can be very stressful to try to travel from the continental USA all the way to Vieques in one day as unexpected travel delays can cause you to miss your transportation to Vieques.
  • Please consider staying on the main island of Puerto Rico at least one night prior to traveling to Vieques especially if your scheduled arrival in San Juan is late afternoon or evening. The risk of flight delays affecting your travel plans to San Juan and then to Vieques is not zero so give yourself some margin for error.

Getting to The Vieques Guesthouse
  • From the ferry:  There are taxis waiting at the ferry in Vieques for transportation to Esperanza.
  • From the airport:  You will want to schedule a taxi in advance (the morning of or day before is plenty of time) to pick you up at the airport to avoid waiting for a taxi to arrive.
  • If you are driving a rental vehicle use GoogleMaps (no Apple Maps or other navigation apps).  Here is the link for The Vieques Guesthouse.
